WELCOME

This site is an extension of my book, Freedom From The Press: Journalism and State Power in Singapore, published by the National University of Singapore Press in 2012. It contains resources such as an updated primer on Singapore and links to sites that I have found useful in my own research. This is also the new home for articles from my blog Journalism.SG. Thanks for visiting. – Cherian George

GET THE BOOK

In Singapore, try Kinokuniya, Select Books or Popular. Or borrow it from a public library (079.5957 GEO). To buy it online, try Amazon or Mary Martin Booksellers, an independent bookstore with an office in Singapore. You can purchase the e-book (or individual chapters) through Project Muse, which may be available to you free of charge if your university subscribes to it.

MY FAVOURITE CITATION

Picture
Sunny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is an epic graphic novel telling the story of Singapore media and politics through the eyes of a fictitious artist. Sunny’s tale includes detailed accounts of how the media are managed by the PAP government, which he credits to Freedom From The Press. His book is pure genius, and I don’t think any academic citation of my work could possibly beat this!
